Bonnie Ferguson Butler

En plein air painting defines my style. Several characteristics contribute to the distinctive beauty of this method. Pieces are smaller to capture a scene quickly. Time constraints in a changing environment cause them to lack extensive detail, so they appear slightly fuzzy or unfinished. They also tend to have a freshness and spontaneity which makes them impossible to compare to studio work.

I saw my first tree when I was a Senior in college, the result of a required art class outside of my Science majors. Transformed, I then redirected to balance Art and Biochemistry over the coming years. Graduate work in Humanities and Art History gave me the proper foundation for further studies, while local artist instructors shared their passion. First a watercolorist and quilter, I now paint in soft pastel and oil. My joy is working en plein air and I see trees regularly now.

Biography:

I was born in Missouri and moved to South Carolina as a child. After a short time in Georgia, I have lived in lush Virginia for over 20 years. I appreciate the opportunities Northern Virginia affords artists and I am proud to be a juried Associate with Lorton's Workhouse Arts Center and am award-winning in both pastels and oils. In addition to being a plein air artist, I enjoy being active in the arts, from belonging to and volunteering with many societies to spending time in the schools and teaching the Boy Scout Art Merit Badge.

See my work on display at local places like the Workhouse Arts Center, Fairfax County Government Center, Franconia Government Center, Goodwin House, Kingstowne Library, and Kingstowne Active Adult Center.
